How the Color Formats Differ

HEX notation represents a color as a six-digit hexadecimal number, such as #FF5733, where pairs of digits encode the red, green, and blue components. The RGB format writes those same components as decimal numbers, like 255, 87, 51.

HSL describes color by hue, saturation, and lightness. Hue is a 0-360 degree angle around the color wheel, while saturation and lightness are percentages. The HSL value 11, 100%, 60% describes the same orange as the HEX and RGB forms on this page.

  • HEX pairs encode red, green, and blue as base-16 values.
  • RGB is the direct decimal form of the same three components.
  • HSL separates the pure hue from its saturation and lightness.
  • All three formats describe identical colors from different angles.

When to Use a Color Converter

Designers and developers constantly switch between these formats: a hex code from a design tool becomes CSS, an RGB value from an image editor needs translating, or an HSL value must be expressed as hex for a theme file. This converter handles all those cases instantly.

Because every field updates as you type, you can also explore how changing one component affects a color — an easy way to learn how the formats relate.
